But Beautiful...

10 May 2009

Keith Jarrett characterizes the book as a little diamond. On the back page one can read that it is the only book for Jazz he recommends to his friends.

''But Beautiful'' was published in 1991 and honored with the Somerset Maugham Award. With 17 years of delay the book is finally available in Greek.

Geoff Dyer was born in 1958 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. In 1986 he issued a study with the title ''Ways of Telling: Work of John Berger'', while in 1989 he published his first novel ''The Colour of Memory''. His book ''But beautiful'' was the one that made him known. When he began writing it Geoff Dyer was unsure of the form it would take.

''His purpose, as he explains, was to present the musicians not as they actually are, but through his own eyes''.

In music pain is transformed into songs, tough experiences into performance styles. Reading Geoff Dyer’s book, we travel with a car through the night with Duke who writes his songs on the coffee shop’s menu. We can observe Young being isolated from the rest of the world to realize that loneliness always existed and was expressed in his way of performing. Truth and imagination coexist, while the reader is lost in the world of Jazz without wanting to separate the reality for the dream, even when the dream becomes a nightmare.
