She never left her country because she loved it and could not compare it with anything.
For years she has been singing Cuban music all over the world.
She owes much of her reputation to Wim Wenders' documentary "Buena Vista Social Club".
Omara Portuondo is 88 years old and still sings and records discs.
"Cubans are very optimistic and very happy people. Music is the blood that runs in our veins. We sing at the same time we work and fight, while we simultaneously have fun. It is something that gives us a special power. I personally love the sea and I swim almost all year round. But above all I love music. Anyone who lives in music and by the sea is like being reborn every day..."
